Lists

Overview

Use the bulleted list or numbered list buttons to set lists on web pages or in documents. A bulleted list is also known as an unordered list. A numbered list is also called an ordered list.

Do not use characters, such as dashes, in place of bullets to create a ‘manual’ list.

When creating a list on a web page, do not copy and paste lists from Word, PowerPoint, PDFs or other websites. Although these may appear to you on the page as lists, it’s unlikely they’ll be given the correct HTML. Instead, paste the content into a plain text program such as Notepad on Windows then copy it again from Notepad and paste it into the page editor.

The list buttons should only be used to create lists – not to style text, such as to create a single subheading or similar.

What and why: When you set a list using a button, it comes with hidden information that assistive technologies can read out, such as how many points are in the list. This affords those without clear sight, for example, the same information a sighted user gets by simply scanning the text.
